Supercritical Adaptogens

The word adaptogen is used by healers and herbal doctors to refer to a type of herb product that is claimed to increase the body's resistance to trauma, anxiety, stress, and fatigue.

There are many different types of adaptogens. Those you may have heard of include Siberian Ginseng, green tea, and echinacea. But there are some others that have worked historically for the treatment of trauma and are being used today as well. There are many but are some that I have used: Korean Red Gingseng, Ashwagandha, and Rodiola Rosea. The adaptogenic features of these herbs are many. Korean Red Gingseng (Panax for Panacea) contains a class of steroid-like compounds, triterpene saponins, found exclusively in Panax (ginseng). This is where Ginseng's curative properties are thought to be derived from. But be careful these herbs can have side effects too so proceed with caution and add these items gradually. Many times these are sold in a combination that is usually labeled as some sort of adrenal support. These products can be valuable as well. New Chapter Stress Advantage, Softgel Capsules

The history of adaptogens dates back 1000s of years to ancient India and China, but modern study began in the late 1940s. In 1947, Nikolai Lazarev states that an adaptogen as an agent that allows the body to counter adverse physical, chemical, or biological stressors by raising nonspecific resistance toward such stress, thus allowing the organism to "adapt" to the stressful circumstances.

Israel Brekhman studied in the Medical Academy of the U.S.S.R., specializing in Pharmacology. After graduating as a medical doctor in 1945, he was sent by the Navy to the Far East of Russia, where he spent the rest of his life. During this 45 years of research, Dr. Brekhman became the world authority on adaptogens. He is best known in the West for his work with "Siberian" ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus).

Much of the scientific literature about this herb is from Brekhman's articles. His first article, "A New Medicinal Plant of the Family of Araliaceae -- The Spiny Eleutherococcus" (1960), had a huge impact not only on the scientific community, but also on the general public. Only two years after Brekhman's first published work, the Eleutherococcus extract was approved by the Pharmacological Committee of the U.S.S.R. Ministry of Health for clinical use as a "stimulant."

Dr. Brekhman held nearly 40 patents, including 21 international patents. He published hundreds of scientific articles and books. Many books and journals on adaptogens, published in the United States, Japan, and Sweden, have been based on Dr. Brekhman and his landmark work.

Adaptogen research and studies pertaining to them gained great momentum in Russia during the cold war era. During this time Dr. Brekhman pioneered a vast scientific effort funded by the Russian government involving a reported 1200 scientists. This scientific community explored plant biological codes and analyzed their molecular structures.

This work laid the groundwork for the development of herb supplements to help combat stress that may include several different adaptogens in different proportions all created to try and help relieve stress and renew the body on a cellular level.

...Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned...
- The Second Coming, William Butler Yeats

There are times when we feel that "things fall apart" and our "centre cannot hold." Under stress, our primitive organs strain to protect us, and we prime for flight or fight. That was what the jungle needed, and that was fine when our lives were brief. Now, we live to old age in cities and towns, there is no place to run to escape from the stress, and our bodies cannot adapt and endure. Our adrenal glands burn, our hearts race, our immune systems collapse, and we struggle.

But there are herbal friends we can turn to for constant support. Some come from China, others from India, Indonesia, or Russia, and their strength is in giving us strength. Core strength. The strength and silence of a confident warrior elegantly poised for battle. The herbs in Supercritical Stress Advantage™ have been used for millennia by women and men under stress, to prepare them for the ultimate challenge - to create a dignified life well lived.

With confidence in the power of these herbs, and with pride in their potency and purity, we offer to you the wisdom of Supercritical Stress Advantage™.

Which comes first ~ the stressful event or the stress?
The answer is surprisingly "neither". We come first. If we're strong ~ if our physiologies are flexible, adaptive, and resilient ~ then waves of life joyously wash over us. If, on the other hand, we're tired and weakened, then those same waves of life crash against our brittle nervous systems and break our spirits. The antidote to stress is thus not found in withdrawing from the world ~ that is simply not possible; and what is more, the world needs us! The answer lies in strengthening our all-important and innate abilities to adapt to the inevitable changes that arise in the world. Remember: we come first...

Some elegant souls are born "cool and collected", with their adaptive skills a gift outright from the source of Creation. For others, a graceful life is a gift of experience, perhaps cultivated by yoga, meditation, or tai chi. And there is yet another gift from Mother Nature helping us to cultivate inner silence and strength, and this is her gift of sacred healing herbs. A growing body of research reveals that special jewels in the herbal realm can shift the body's stress response in favor of the "cool and collected". The diamond amongst the herbs, called "adaptogens" because of their ability to help the body adapt to stress, is unquestionably Rhodiola rosea.
